A hookah, also known as a water pipe or narghile, is a device used for smoking flavored tobacco called shisha. The word "hookah" comes from the Persian word "huqqa." The practice of smoking a hookah has a long history and cultural significance in various regions, including the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa.

Base (or Water Bowl): The bottom part of the hookah is a container filled with water. The smoke passes through the water, which serves to cool and filter it, creating a smoother inhalation experience.

Shaft (or Stem): The shaft is a vertical tube rising from the base. It connects to the bowl, and users inhale through the hose attached to the top of the shaft.

Bowl: The bowl is located at the top of the shaft and is where the flavored tobacco (shisha) is placed. It often has a metal or foil covering with small holes to allow heat from the charcoal to reach the tobacco.

Hose: The hose is used for inhaling the smoke. Modern hoses typically have a mouthpiece for each user and may be made of materials like silicone or plastic.

Charcoal: Traditionally, natural charcoal is used to heat the tobacco in the bowl. The heated tobacco produces smoke that is drawn through the water in the base and into the hose.

The process of using a hookah involves placing the flavored tobacco in the bowl, lighting the charcoal, and then inhaling through the hose. The water in the base serves to cool the smoke and filter out some impurities.
